About SBxCHL

7_9_19 Pioneer in Medicine - Dr. Qadeer

Beyond being a volunteer program, we pride ourselves on being a true family. As such, we strongly believe in supporting each other to reach our goals of becoming healthcare professionals, while working together to serve the local South Bronx community.

SBxCHL started out of need.  The founding members needed meaningful medical exposure and patient experience to fortify their interest in medicine.  They also needed a positive environment where they could share resources and find solidarity with peers with similar goals.  They needed guidance from mentors that had traveled a similar path and understood the challenges before them.  The South Bronx Clinics needed assistance in their important yet undervalued task of providing primary care to a large population in the Mott Haven, Morrisania, and Hunts Point areas of the South Bronx.  Thus, a mutually beneficial and supportive relationship was born with a mission focused on the support of the surrounding community and the growth of its members. In April of 2019, our first coordinator meeting took place in a coffee shop in Harlem.  On July 11th, we accepted our very first two volunteers.

SBxCHL is completely student-led. Student coordinators run the daily operations and the leaders collectively make most of the decisions in the program. Dr. Qadeer serve as a mentor in the positions of Co-Director. Co-directors meet weekly with the coordinators to discuss events and review plans for the group. They also meet individually with members to provide guidance on their paths to careers in healthcare.
